The latest Pectra update on the Ethereum network has introduced the EIP-7702 standard, substantially enhancing Ethereum wallets by integrating smart wallet functionalities. This innovative feature has seen rapid adoption, recording over 11,000 authorizations within its first week. The update aims to simplify access to Ethereum’s sophisticated functions for users, regardless of their technical expertise. How Does EIP-7702 Enhance Smart Wallets? EIP-7702 significantly reduces the need for users to switch from traditional Ethereum wallets to specialized smart wallets. The standard allows a conventional wallet, controlled by a private key, to grant temporary authorization to a smart contract, effectively functioning like a smart wallet. This advancement lets users benefit from sophisticated transaction features without sacrificing their existing wallets. The system activates a “delegation indicator” when a wallet authorizes a smart contract, processing transactions through this contract instead of the conventional method. Users retain autonomy as they can revoke authorization whenever desired, providing both security and adaptability. This model facilitates advanced functionalities such as multi-order transactions, multi-signature verifications, spending limits, and automated transaction scheduling. Who Leads in the Wallet Adoption Race? Following the Pectra update, certain wallets and platforms were quick to embrace EIP-7702, standing out in competitive rankings. Data from Entropy Advisors reveals that a significant portion of authorizations link to WhiteBIT’s delegation contract, with the platform executing over 5,300 transactions to enhance user experience through potential methods like gas sponsorship and batch transaction processing. OKX leads among individual wallets, accumulating over 3,100 EIP-7702 authorizations and surpassing rivals. In contrast, MetaMask registers over 1,300 delegation records but hosts higher ETH values in its contracts, suggesting users engage in transactions involving greater sums. The platform’s latest innovations extend beyond EIP-7702. The Pectra update encompasses enhancements for Ethereum validators and improvements focused on Layer-2 scaling via “blob” data advancements. Yet, the dominant user-centric innovation remains the integration of smart wallet capabilities into standard Ethereum wallets through EIP-7702. • EIP-7702 quickly adopted, over 11,000 authorizations in a week. • WhiteBIT leads in platform adoption, executing over 5,300 transactions. • OKX surpasses in wallet authorizations with more than 3,100. • MetaMask handles higher ETH values despite fewer authorizations. The Pectra update marks a pivotal shift in Ethereum’s approach to wallet management, broadening user access to complex blockchain functions. By embedding smart wallet functionalities into traditional wallets, Ethereum seeks to enhance the overall user experience while maintaining security and convenience.
